Albufeira amongst best holiday destinations in the world

Tourists have elected Albufeira as the third best holiday destination in the world, according to travel experts Trip Advisor, an Internet site with more than 10 million members and which has 32 million visits per month.

The website, which is based in the USA and, as well as contributors, is made up of 14 leading tour operators, publishes opinions and advice from tourists on hotels, restaurants, and destinations that they visit.

The “beauty and diversity of its beaches” as well as its “exciting nightlife” are what made Albufeira stand out to Trip Advisor’s members, who described it as a “modern city resort”. Its cultural heritage was also highlighted, with one visitor writing “it is easy to imagine Albufeira in the eighth century when the moors decided to call the city the Castle on the Sea”.

Ranking first amongst beach destinations were the Canary Islands, followed by Amalfi, Italy. And by ranking third, Albufeira beat off competition from destinations such as Corfu (Greece), the French Riviera and the Island of Cyprus.

Albufeira Mayor Desidério Silva acknowledged his satisfaction at the International recognition. He said “It is an improtant international acknowledgment. It is an important destination based on the opinions and comments of the people who visit us.

This demonstrates that the investment that was been made in infrastructures and entertainment is being paid back”.

Living in Portugal is cheap

Figures released last week by Eurostat showed that within the Euro Zone Portugal ranks fourth for cheapest goods and services.

Out of the 16 European Union member states, in 2008 Portugal was the fourth cheapest country in which to live. Only in terms of cars was it more expensive than its counterparts.

Eurostat discovered that prices for goods and services in Portugal are, on average, 20 percent lower than in most of the other 27 EU countries, and is the fourth cheapest out of the 16 that share the same currency.

There were two outstanding areas in which Portugal does not have more competitive prices: personal transport and electronic products.

Vehicles in Portugal are the third most expensive in Europe.

Regarding food, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), tobacco, reastuarants and hotels, Portugal’s prices are still below the European average.
